Fall Site Visits

Ronnie's group visited the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant to learn about how the facility purifies approximately 80 million gallons of waste water daily, of which 26 million gallons of processed water are released down the Los Angeles River daily.

Laura's group visited Marsh Park with scientists from the Council for Watershed Health to learn about the Council's mechanisms for testing water quality along the LA River. They were also accompanied by a representative from the Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority, which is the local government public entity that oversees the newly opened Marsh Park.

Ian's group visited Canyon Creek Park where they met with Amanda Begley to discuss how TreePeople advances a vision for a climate resilient Los Angeles. This group learned that TreePeople was started over 40 years ago by founder, Andy Lipkis when he was only 18 years old after he became inspired to make cities more sustainable.

Menelik's group went back to the Elysian Valley section of the LA River to meet with Steve Appleton, owner of Frogspot, founder of LA River Kayak Safari, former president of the Elysian Valley Neighborhood Council, artist, and entrepreneur. Steve discussed with students his prototype for a water filtration device that he designed and manufactured, giving students important insight into how they may be able to problem solve creatively within existing constraints.
